This year, we are proud to honor our Board Chairman and longtime supporter of the Cayton, Carl Freed, along with our founder and the visionary behind the museum, Esther Netter, as she announces her retirement.
We look forward to celebrating the past and future of the institution with you tonight!

2023 HONOREES
HONORING OUR BOARD CHAIRPERSON CARL FREED AND CELEBRATING THE 35-YEAR LEGACY OF OUR FOUNDER ESTHER NETTER
CARL FREED
Carl Freed has spent his entire career orchestrating innovative projects for some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. As Senior Vice-President of Business Development at Metropolitan Entertainment, he produced the Backstreet Boys’ first-ever U.S. arena/amphitheater tour in 1998; developed the super-successful “Up In Smoke” tour featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Eminem; negotiated the largest webcast contract at that time for Woodstock 1999; and secured exclusive agreements with venues such as New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. He also established a corporate entertainment division for Metropolitan and led the company into the digital age by creating and overseeing www.concerthotline.com. In January 2003, launched Trevanna Entertainment, providing hands-on consulting, production, and promotional services for live entertainment events and brand partnerships. Project highlights include Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam at MetLife Stadium (the longest-running hip-hop radio show on the planet); the multi-year Red Bull Music Academy and Festival in NYC; and Sirius XM's Small Stages events, which showcase stadium-filling talent such as Paul McCartney, Metallica, Drake and Lady Gaga in intimate and historic venues like Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Carl is a senior consultant to S2BN, a global concert company operated by the legendary Michael Cohl, as well as the co-founder of a mentoring program at the Future Leadership Institute, a charter school in Harlem. He also proudly serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Cayton Children’s Museum. Carl splits his time between New York City and Los Angeles, where he shares a beautiful home with his wife Jennifer and dog, and eagerly awaits visits from his son Trevor and his daughter Savannah and her husband Noah Simon.
ESTHER NETTER
As founder of the Cayton Children’s Museum and its beloved predecessor, the Zimmer Children’s Museum, Esther Netter has dedicated the last 35 years of her life to nurturing children into responsible, kind, and compassionate humans and building a better world. Her leadership and passion for uniting supporters, business leaders, community partners, artists, and youth around a shared vision helped grow the institution from a small 600-square-foot play space into Los Angeles’ preeminent children’s museum and one of the community’s leading innovators in early childhood education. Over her three-decade-long tenure, Esther’s accomplishments include the creation of museum programs like youTHink, a California arts youth education program that honed the power of art in schools to ignite social change, and Show and Tell, a notable multi-year initiative that brought together local artists to create themed community artworks. Esther’s early career in teen outreach in the public school system sparked her lifelong passion for engaging children, youth, and families through the creative arts. While she is so proud of the legacy she leaves as the founder of the Cayton, her biggest accomplishment in life is her family and the bonus family she has created with her partner Seth Schulweis. Esther is the proud Eema, Hebrew for mom, of Eli and her husband Oded, Moshe and his wife Desiree, Shira and her husband Omer and bonus kids, Miranda and her husband Joe, Sarah and her husband Sasha, and Aaron and his partner Allie; and Savta, Hebrew for grandma, to Noam, Shaya, Boaz, Eitan, Ilan, Maayan, and her bonus grandkids Reuben and Rafa. If life does imitate art, Esther looks to her family as proof—it was her children who inspired the Zimmer and her grandchildren who provided the vision for the Cayton.
